Mayflower Wind to Bring Offshore Wind Ashore at Brayton Point

Supplements Cape Cod Efforts

On May 27, 2021, Mayflower Wind announced it signed an agreement to use transmission assets at Brayton Point in Somerset, MA to bring clean offshore wind energy from its federal offshore energy lease area to the South Coast.

Brayton Point’s robust grid infrastructure and waterfront location make it an ideal interconnection location for offshore wind. The Mayflower Wind offshore wind energy project will use state-of-the-art high voltage direct current technology that minimizes marine cabling, reduces energy losses, and strengthens the New England grid.

The cable landing in Somerset will supplement Mayflower’s long-standing and continuing efforts in Falmouth on Cape Cod.

G&G Surveys Ongoing

Geophysical and geotechnical (G&G) surveys that provide key data about the seafloor and subsea for evaluation in the ongoing project design and permitting process continue for our Cape Cod landing route and will soon begin for the Brayton Point cable route.

During safe and/or down time, members of crews have taken part in a weekly photo contest. The winners of the first round are featured below.

NERACOOS bouy data

Real Time Metocean Data Available

Mayflower Wind has partnered with the Northeastern Regional Association of Coastal Ocean Observing Systems (NERACOOS) to share real-time weather and ocean data collected by the buoy for mariners and the scientific community to use. NERACOOS mission is to produce, integrate, and communicate high quality information that helps ensure safety, economic and environmental resilience, and sustainable use of the coastal ocean. Mayflower Wind’s floating buoy data will help to support these efforts and help to inform other research efforts in the Atlantic region. Visit NERACOOS to view the data.

Mayflower Wind, a 50/50 joint venture between Shell New Energies and Ocean Winds, is developing an offshore wind lease area with the potential to supply up to 2,000 megawatts of low-cost clean energy.
